Buying Fruits & Vegetables
- Choose grapefruit and oranges heavy for their size. They have more juice.
- If you need to avoid sugar, look for regular brands of fruit and juice that aren't sweetened. Do the same to find canned and frozen vegetables without salt.
- Canned tomato chunks and vegetable pieces are better buys than fancier grades for soups and stews.
- Sliced, cut or chopped frozen or canned vegetables usually cost less than whole ones.
- Check packaged produce carefully for quality.
- Pass up wilted vegetables and overripe fruit, even if they cost less.
- If lettuce is sold by the head, buy the heaviest.
- Try other greens for salads. Look for endive, escarole, spinach and cabbage. Buy those that cost the least per pound.
- Pre-cut coleslaw, cabbage or salad mixtures are costly.
- Individually frozen vegetables in large plastic bags usually cost less per serving than small packages.
