Elliptical / Cross Trainers have gained nationwide popularity in health clubs because they are fun to use, get the heart pumping and offer a “gentle-on-the-joints” efficient cardiovascular workout. They get their name elliptical name from the elipse motion your feet make. This motion can be made both forward and backward, giving you more leg muscle building opportunity. Resistance levels and in some cases stride length can be changed to increase your workout intensity.
The Cross Trainer name comes from the fact that you work both your lower body and upper body with the same machine. Moving handlebars add arm movements and resistance to your workout, giving you a full body result. All Ellipiticals also have fixed handles so that you can isolate to just lower body exercise.
A new entry in the category is the Seated Elliptical from Octane, known as the xRide. This machine allows you to have even less joint impact by doing your exercises in a seated position, and is the only elliptical on the market that lets you isolate upper and lowerbody workouts independent of each other. This product is becoming increasingly popular with 2nd Wind customers because of its great workout options and comfort of use.
