By taking an active approach to aiding your teen in eating right and getting fit, you can help them to ultimately live a happier, healthier life.

The following three steps will help facilitate healthier eating and exercise habits:

Set an Example:

If you want your teen to eat healthier and exercise more, make yourself a living example! Teens are much more likely to take you seriously if you are practicing the same healthy habits that you insist on them partaking in. Often times, teens react negatively when being told what to do. Instead of just being an instructor, let your teen follow by example. Keep only healthy snacks in the house, exercise regularly, and don’t eat in front of the TV.

Be Supportive and Remain Positive

Being an overweight teen can be tough, and sometimes trying to lose weight can be even tougher. Show your teen you fully support her – be understanding rather than angry if he/she slips up once in a while, and make yourself available to talk to. The more support your teen has from you, the more likely he or she will be to succeed in weight loss efforts.

Get in Physical Activity as a Family

Make time to exercise as a family! Whether you choose to go for a walk, play a game of tag, or hit up the gym, being physically active as a family can be a fun and healthy way to spend time together.
